Green Tea Side Effects Outweighed by Benefits

The longstanding tradition of using green tea has been an alternative approach for some people who prefer the natural way of enhancing the functions of their body. However, herbs contain active components that can bring about negative side effects and may cause adverse outcomes when used together with other herbs, supplements or drugs. Below are some of the well-known green tea side effects and the various factors that make the benefits far outweigh the negative effects.

One of the most commonly recognized green tea side effects is insomnia. Since green tea contains caffeine, it stimulates the central nervous system and causes sleeplessness. Aside from this, caffeine also acts as a diuretic and can aggravate urge incontinence, increases the production of stomach acid, causes constipation due to the tannin component in tea, increases heart rate and blood pressure, and increases blood sugar levels.

Less serious green tea side effects have also been reported with the consumption of the beverage. These include the following heartburn; upset stomach; loss of appetite; constipation or diarrhea; nervousness, irritability, or anxiety; and headache.

High doses can also cause severe green tea side effects like caffeine toxicity. Prolonged consumption can also be habit-forming and can lead to tolerance and psychological independence. Abruptly quitting green tea consumption can likewise lead to withdrawal symptoms.

While all these green tea side effects are attributed to the drink’s caffeine content, the fact is that the caffeine count in green tea is substantially lower compared to coffee and other types of teas. Experts are one in saying that to avoid the various side effects, green tea must be consumed in moderation. Also, most of the green tea side effects that are not considered severe can be avoided by adding milk to tea to reduce the potency of tannins.

Despite all the negative consequences that are associated with drinking green tea, there are a lot more reasons why many people still stand by the efficacy of the brew. Some of the extremely important and well-recognized benefits of green tea include the following:

· May help prevent certain types of cancer

· Reduces the risk of heart diseases

· Helps strengthen blood vessels that sends oxygen and valuable nutrients to the heart and brain

· Lowers total cholesterol levels and improves the ratio between the good and the bad cholesterol

· Safer and more effective alternative to other weight loss products

· Promotes weight loss by increasing metabolism without overstimulating the adrenal glands

· Potential cure to obesity

All these positive aspects can make one safely say that the benefits of green tea indeed prevail over green tea side effects. This is especially true when you consider that the side effects can be avoided by drinking green tea with restraint.

The Benefits of Green Tea – Cancer

Compounds in Green Tea that are thought to help against cancer:

Catechins

A green tea leaf contains catechins, they are the components that give a bitter taste to the tea.

EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate) accounts for 10%-50% of the total green tea catechins. By virtue of its peculiar stereochemical structure, EGCG possesses much stronger anti-oxidant qualities than the other catechins found in green tea and plays an important role in preventing cancer and cardiovascular diseases. ECGC remove oxidised free radicals from the body which prevents damage to the cells and DNA. The anti oxidant properties of EGCG are believed to be 100 more times more effective than vitamin C and 25 times more effective than vitamin E. (http://www.herbs-tech.com/product/egcg.asp)

Flavonoids

Flavonoids are plant pigments; they are the brightly coloured chemical constituents found in most fresh fruits and vegetables. Flavonoids are essential for processing vitamin C and are needed to maintain capillary walls. They may aid in protecting against infection and deficiency can result in a tendency to bruise easily.

Health benefits

Reduces the risk of cancer

Acting components: Flavonoids and Catechins

How:

Carcinogens are cancer causing agents. Phytochemicals may prevent carcinogens from forming. Flavonoids are a type of phytochemical found in Green tea. Experimental studies have shown that tea and tea polyphenols have anti-carcinogenic properties against breast cancer.¹

Studies also suggest that ECGC may reduce the risk of cancer.²

A population-based, case-control study of breast cancer among Chinese, Japanese and Filipino women in Los Angeles County suggested an inverse link between Green tea intake and the development of breast cancer. ³ Similar study was done with women in Italy which showed a similar inverse link.⁴

Results from animal studies and possible cancer inhibitory mechanisms might be applicable to human cancer prevention. The results and possible applications are discussed in a study by C.S Yang et al. 2000. 

‘Free radicals attack healthy cells, which changes their DNA, allowing tumors [sic] to grow. Antioxidants are substances that inhibit the oxidation process and act as protective agents. Restrains tumours

Acting component: Catechins (EGCG and ECG)

How:

EGCG stops the growth of tumours by inducing apoptosis¹ (process of cell self destruction), inhibiting cell-growth and disrupting the cell-cycle. ²

EGCG suppresses the growth of cancerous cells, ECG in some cases was found to be more effective as suppressing growth than EGCG. ³ Green tea contains both of these Catechins.

Angiogenesis is the growth of new blood vessels from pre-existing capillaries. This process is involved in the development of cancer. Angiogenesis is necessary for tumour growth, as it provides nutrients and oxygen for the growing tumour. A potential mechanism by which green tea may prevent cancer development is through the inhibition of angiogenesis.⁴

Researchers at the University of Murcia in Spain (UMU) and the John Innes Center (JIC) in Norwich have shown that EGCG prevents cancer cells from growing by binding to a specific enzyme.

-Research is published in the International Journal for Cancer Research.

Green Tea Diet: Weight Loss And Other Health Benefits Of Green Tea

Overweight is one of biggest health problems in the US. Being overweight can lead to many health problems – diabetes, stroke, heart disease, arthritis, cancer, hypertension and fatigue. If you are overweight, then losing weight is great way to prevent some of the health problems. Green tea helps you lose weight and this is healthy weight loss. Besides the weight loss benefit, there are other health benefits of green tea.

There are many fad diets, weight loss pills, low carb diets. Most of the times this will help you lose weight fast but you gain weight after a certain period of time. Green tea weight loss is safe. Decaffeinated green tea does not have the health benefits as the regular one because the process of removing caffeine involves a chemical process and this destroys the health benefits.

Origins of Green tea

Historically, the Chinese have been using green tea as medicinal drink. The general consensus is that Chinese Emperor Shen Nung discovered green tea when he was boiling water and leaves from a tree fell into the pot! Green tea comes from the plant called Carmellia Sinensis.

The green tea has the health benefits because of the way it is processed. Green tea is steamed while processing and thus preserving its natural antioxidants. The black tea processing involves full oxidation and thus does not have the health benefits of the green tea. Both green tea and black tea still have the caffeine so if you are consuming this at night, then this will keep you awake. Caffeine can be harmful for the body since an excess of it can cause heart palpitations, hypertension, and insomnia. Because green tea diets contain only very low levels of caffeine, there is no danger of experiencing these side-effects.

Health Benefits of Green Tea

1. It prevents Cancer. Green tea contains catechin polyphenols especially epigallocatechin gallate or EGCG. This is a powerful antioxidant that is known to not only destroy cancer cells but also prevent cancer. The latest studies on green tea were able to prove that green tea diet can effectively protect the skin from damage due to ultraviolet light radiation. Green tea is also widely recognized as a substance that can protect against different types of cancers such as stomach cancer, prostate cancer, ovarian cancer, oral cancer, cancer of the colon, breast and cervical cancers.

2. EGCG reduces LDL cholesterol (the harmful cholesterol). This prevents the blood from forming clots, which is a leading cause of heart attacks! The study on green tea diets was conducted in China using 240 people with high cholesterol levels as volunteers. They were placed on a green tea diet of one capsule (equivalent to seven cups of green tea) or were given one placebo every day. After twelve weeks, those who were on a green tea diet dropped sixteen percent in their cholesterol levels.
.
3. The weight loss (or fat loss) is because EGCG in green tea diet increases the 24-hour energy expenditure of the body. A research on green tea diets conducted by American and Swiss scientists in the University of Geneva showed an additional increase of four percent in the body’s natural energy expenditure. People who were on a green tea diet were more likely to use up more fats than those not on a green tea diet.

4. Green tea can also be a potential cure to obesity. The catechin polyphenols present in green tea diets can delay the reaction of gastric and pancreatic lipases in the body. These enzymes convert calories in the body into fats. By delaying this enzymatic activity, green tea diets can prevent fat from being stored and hence prevent obesity.

As mentioned earlier, green tea contains caffeine that makes it a mild an appetite-suppressant. However, caffeine content in green tea diets is not as high as those found in other caffeine-based beverages, like coffee. In conclusion, green tea has many health benefits including weight loss and fat loss. This method is proven and is natural. There are variations of green diets like the green tea pills, green tea capsules, green tea patches etc. These make it convenient for you to carry them while traveling and could be more concentrated. If possible, try to consume green as a drink.

How to Discover the Benefits of Green Tea Extract

How to Discover the Benefits of Green Tea Extract

Tea itself has been around a lot longer than some of us think, it was the early Chinese civilizations that discovered the plant and began cultivating it. They are said to have used it’s restorative and healing powers in many ways, including treating headaches.

Moving on to more recent times, many studies about the benefits of green tea extract have been picked up and published my the mainstream press. While some headlines like ‘drink 3 cups of tea a day to ward of cancer’ are a good way of sparking our curiosity there’ usually a lot more to it than meets the eye. Drinking a quality green tea which has these extracts is obviously one way of making sure your body gets these so called health benefits and one other is by taking green tea capsules too.

So, lets just mention one or two of the most interesting benefits that caught my attention. A lot has been written about the role green tea has played in weight loss or weight reduction. It’s a complex area where the latest fads and findings are often put forward as the next big thing to try but disappointingly often lead us into a vicious circle of trial and error. So I was intrigued to read about the use of green tea capsules as part of a dietary regime which seemed to give discernible results.

It seems that green tea possesses a good many powerful antioxidants which help our own metabolic rate increase by a certain percentage above what our normal rate would be had we not drank the tea. What this means is that our body burns calories faster, so eventually resulting in a loss in body fat. Let’s also not forget that eating a healthy diet and taking the right amount of exercise also counts.

The benefits of green tea extract with relation to the disease cancer has also caused many of us to sit up and listen. It’s being looked upon more in the way of a protective and preventative benefit that we get, rather than anything else. Again it’s these potent compounds and substances that have such strong antioxidant properties that seem to be the clue to why it works.

There’s a lot more ongoing research into what is one of nature’s plants and the list of other additional benefits is quite lengthy. So pass the green tea and put the kettle on to get those benefits yourself.

Green Tea Plus Provides Many Health Benefits

Green Tea Plus has been very successful because the news of its benefits has reached the public. Many people were used to drinking coffee to start their days or finish off their meals at the end of a long day. Recently, Green Tea Plus became more popular and for some people a replacement for their coffee because evidence appeared that some of the substances in Green Tea Plus and other green tea products had many health benefits.
